Tales of Retirement, design ethnography

Over the past months, I conducted a design ethnography with Nesta and the Helen Hamlyn Centre, exploring different experiences and attitudes around the topic of retirement.
The intention of this research was to present the lives of those experiencing retirement in a way that engaged them in the conversation, allowing people to draw upon their lives and assist in the creation of more textured and realistic representations of their experiences.

The Little Things wins the Fixperts, Helen Hamlyn Design Award!!

The Helen Hamlyn Design Awards is an open competition that rewards creativity in people-centred design across all disciplines. Entrants are nominated by Royal College of Art professors and heads of department.

The film, The Little Things, describes how RCA graduate Florie Salnot created a simple new device to make it easier for people with frailty in the hands to wear earrings.

Judge's comment: ‘This collaboration addresses not just functional need but personal desire as well. The film is beautifully made and the design is ingenious – a 'little thing' that makes a big difference.'

Fixperts is a social project and open knowledge sharing platform to enable designers to use their making skills to solve problems for other people. It was founded by RCA alumni, Daniel Charny and James Carrigan.
